We first saw alpacas at
the 1999 AOBA Nationals held in
Columbus
,
OH
. Every night for the next 3
months Fred was on the internet gathering alpaca information.
We visited 5 farms and asked a boat load of questions.
We own 12 acres and
wanted to utilize the land to earn additional income for our daughter's
college and our retirement. Learning
that you can raise 6 alpacas to an acre got our attention.
The availability of mortality insurance and the farming tax
advantages convinced us we wanted to become alpaca breeders.
We started with the
purchase of 2 pregnant suri females in August, 1999. The
next year we purchased 2 more pregnant suri females and 1 suri yearling
male.
Our first crias were born a day apart on a June weekend in 2000. When
a cria is born, you want to spend all your time in the field watching
them. They are adorable.
We now have 15 suris, 8 females and 6 males. (We have sold 6 since 2002.) Our
suris are full Peruvian, the majority have Accoyo bloodlines. We
have 3 breeding males and 3 future herdsires. Our
last crias were born on October 1st and
October 2nd, 2004
. The first is a beautiful
girl named
Cocoa
after her coloring. You can
see her picture at the top of this page.
The second is a gorgeous beige male out of Accoyo Ace.
His name is Ace’s Jack of Hearts.
His picture is at the bottom of this page.
We have been very successful in the show ring. Our
first cria born on the farm, Storm Peruvian Silver Lining, was Grand
Champion at
Ohio
AlpacaFest 2001. We have won 5 Grand Championships, 1 Reserve Grand
Championship and numerous blue and red ribbons.
Bing, Storm and White Chocolate have cria that are sure to add ribbons to
our wall of champions. Bing’s
daughter, Tess, just won Grand Champion at the ALSA Alpaca Championship
Show on October 2nd, 2004.
Our farm goal is to breed for the best suri alpaca. We
look for conformation, lock structure and luster. Our
ribbons are proof of our breeding program.
